Arizona Coalition of School Board Members 

Most time during legislative session and winter training prep (Dec - June) 

Legislative tracking

  • review policy updates from Clarus each week 

  • Watch for bills being heard in standing committees and COW 

  • Send communications for action to members on legislation 

  • Set up meetings with elected officials to discuss bills, issues, etc 

Policy Book

  • following each legislative session, update policy book to include changes and new laws. 

  • Work with members who may have ideas for model policy 

  • Review vetoed legislation and bills not heard for other possible policies

Training (virtual) 

  • work with Pam to identify speakers for virtual trainings (usually 1 per month) 

  • Create zoom link and calendar links 

  • Send at least 3 emails about the training 

  • If applicable, record the training and post it to the resource page of the member portal 

  • Send thank you for attending email with any resources mentioned in the zoom. 

Winter Training 

  • usually in February 

  • The Forum is a great venue, easy to work with and a great space. 

  • Identify program needs and find speakers 

  • Emails to get attendees 

  • Print agendas and bios for attendees 

  • Create PowerPoint for flag, upcoming trainings, and other things you may want to present 

Excellence in Education Awards

  • assemble awards committee (at least 3) 

  • Create form for members to submit nominees 

  • Send at least 4 emails out to membership asking them to submit names for all of the categories 

  • Send spreadsheet with nominees to committee 

  • Schedule zoom for committee to meet 

  • Finalize awards and order 

  • Contact winners and let them know when they will be receiving them 

School Board Members

  • receive calls or emails from current school board members on issues they are facing and help to problem solve or research answer 

Banking

  • Spreadsheet with up to date income/expenses to make filing taxes in May easier 

  • Deposit checks

Mailbox

  • Check mailbox at UPS in Queen Creek at least every other week (they allow you to call and see if there is mail so you don’t have to drive across town if there isn’t any)

Fundraising

  • Create sell sheet (2024 is done, and now will just need to be updated every year) 

Outside groups

  • work with Liberty Network, SBAE, AZFRW, and others to get our name out there 

  • Attend events/training/table 

Social media 

 

Total time:  570 hours a year

Legislature: 170 hours a year (mostly when in session)

  • Listening in to Committee Hearings (mostly Education)

  • Following bills through the process 

  • Reading legislative updates from Clarus on Ed Bills

Policy Book: 80 hours a year (following session)

Events: 120 hours a year (year-round)

  • Finding speakers for each training plus dates 

  • Sending emails about training

  • In-person event: working with the venue on setup and costs

  • Creating Zoom links and updating Google Calendar 

  • Reminders 

Social Media: 50 hours a year

Fielding Calls/Emails: 100 hours a year

Miscellaneous Tasks: 50 hours a year

 

Friends of the Coalition

Most busy during election years plus on and off during the off year to find candidates

Boot camps

  • work with Pam or the candidate to find locations to host 

  • Invite possible candidates

Target district identification

  • done for 2026 

  • Set a goal, then look for voter registration info in possible districts to help decide which have feasible wins

Candidate recruitment 

  •  identify possible candidates in target districts 

  • Mailers

  • Social media

  • Send out information on candidates to voters who align with our mission 

  • Work with Mark Beach on mail 

  • Work with Nate Jackson on data for mailing 

Banking

Liberty Network

  • attend the monthly meeting at the AZFREE office on the third Thursday of each month. (About 2 hours)

  • Discuss what we are working on and what partner groups can do to help 

  • Send events to April to get them on the Liberty network calendar 

 

Total time: 750 hours a year

Candidate/Election Research: 250 hours a year

  • Research requirements for candidates 

  • Identify the target districts for that election season 

  • Find and recruit candidates

Candidate Vetting: 200 hours a year

  • Surveys

  • Phone Calls

  • Trackers

  • Actual Election Work (pulling/getting data, working on mail with Mark, getting items to people willing to doorknock, doorknocking)

Events: 150 hours a year

  • Boot Camps

  • Miscellaneous other events for candidate recruitment or visibility
